THE Edicator, Prof. Tahir Mamman, on Monday, spoke about considering 18 years old for the entry age of universities and other learning places.
The edicato hinted that minors are at fault for some issues faced in higher institutions.
The President of the Scholars’ Labor Union of Schools, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, hailed the Federal Government’s idea, calling it a nice addition.
“We concur. It’s the good thing. What the edicator stated is apt,” ASUU President shared with our correspondent during a chat.
He also said, “The age criterion isn’t new. It’s just that the law enforcers have been slacking.
“In the past, primary school barred entry for under 6-year-olds. After 6 years, you’d finish at 12, then spend another 6 at secondary school, graduating at 18,” Oshodeke explained.
Commonly, tertiary institutions in the nation admit 16-year-olds unless they are notably capable.
The Senate aimed in 2021 during the visit to JAMB, to modify the law limiting candidates to 16 years old or more for the UTME.
Mamman, during the visit to an examination center in Abuja on Monday, advised against parents pushing their kids too much.
According to MYSCHOOLUPDATE, about 1,985,642 aspirants were set to take the UTME of the JAMB, running from Friday, April 19 to Monday.
The edicator said, “The young age of applicants for university is notable. We’ll review it as these kids don’t truly grasp university education.
“It’s the phase when they transition from a coddled setting to managing things on their own. So if they are too young, it leads to issues in universities.
“Examining these; those participating are 15 or 16, it’s unfavorable. Parents should be advised to ease up a bit.”
Mamman praised JAMB’s smooth examination procedures, lauding the use of technology which cut down on malpractice incidences.
“Right from screening to the exam hall, it’s a seamless process. The tech integration in the education system is beneficial.
“As the exam proceeds nationwide, with minimal malpractice reports, technology has played a crucial role,” he mentioned.
When asked about the high number of students seeking limited admission slots, Mamman emphasized the importance of skills acquisition for the youth.
“It’s not just about admission but preparing the youth for a prosperous future. Where do the other 80% go? They’re among us. Skills acquisition is vital,” he noted.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, revealed that the UTME was ongoing in Saudi Arabia due to JAMB’s standards, leading to a fairer, objective exam.
“Sitting comfortably, following instructions, and proper biometrics are facilitated. A unique online exam experience that speeds up processes,” he expressed.
Sununu praised the exam format and its integrity, highlighting the values of online education in maintaining exam fairness.
